Over the last few years, one of the biggest drinks trends to emerge is pre-mixed cocktails. In 2021, the canned/bottled cocktails segment was the fastest growing spirits category.
While these drinks, which run the gamut from the classic (think the Manhattan, the Old-Fashioned and the Cosmo) to innovative and creative (bourbon and cream soda), might seem like a new creation they have been around in one form or another for more than a century. And in many other parts of the world you can find a huge selection of canned cocktails or so-called RTDs (ready to drink beverages), including Japan where canned Highballs are incredibly popular and are sold in convenience stores and on commuter trains.
It’s just not distilled spirits brands, but also famous bartenders, including Jeffrey Morgenthaler and Julie Reiner, who have recently launched canned cocktail brands.
